What's in a Word? (Curiosity)
My personal interpretation of “curiosity” explores the more morbid side of the word, such as the fascination with the unknown, the bizarre, controversial sites from the Wild West internet days, or even dangerous things and places that can lead to one’s demise. I was inspired by the owl witch of Mexican folklore known as “La Lechuza,” as it also gave me the excuse to integrate my fascination for all things supernatural into this one-word challenge. Described as a woman capable of shapeshifting into a massive, melanistic barn owl at night, she is known to lure out her unsuspecting targets by whistling, imitating the voices of said target’s friends and relatives, or by imitating the cries of an infant. The individual's curiosity would draw them outside, trying to determine the source of the noise, allowing La Lechuza to swoop down from her hidden spot to snatch up her next meal. If you’re ever up late at night and hear the wailing of a baby, whistling, or somebody familiar calling for you outside…don’t leave your home.
